Boaters Meeting 16th March – Marine Accident Investigation Branch
Roger Brydge is an Inspector of Marine Accidents at the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) which investigates marine accidents involving UK vessels worldwide and all vessels in UK territorial waters. In a typical year MAIB receives over a 1000 reports of accidents of all types and severity, which leads to dozens of separate investigations being launched, with the aim of helping prevent further avoidable accidents from occurring, rather than establishing blame or liability.
Recent investigations have ranged from the grounding of large tanker and cargo ships in the gentle waters of the Solent, to the tragic losses of life when the yacht Cheeki Rafiki lost her keel in mid-Atlantic and the yacht Orca collided with a dredger 7 miles off Felixstowe.
